About MonkeyBrains.net
Why use MonkeyBrains as your ISP? If you are asking that question, let me present
to you questions you should ask when you want to join any ISP. Naturally, I'll provide answers to my own questions to provide a nice biased argument for you to start sending your money to MonkeyBrains. All set?
- What kind of connectivity does MonkeyBrains have?
Excellent! The modems are at the same place colocated servers go: inside a data center in San Francisco. MonkeyBrains rents a few cabinets (and can rent more if you have a bunch of servers to colocate) and two ethernet connections to a larger ISP which provides transport. MonkeyBrains is in a carrier free server-hotel and can buy bandwidth from one of a dozen providers.
- How secure is the MonkeyBrains facility?
A pass key, hand scan, and a key is needed for physical access. The building is on battery
and diesel electrical backup. There is nothing flammable near the servers.
- Is there a hidden bandwidth limit?
I haven't had any 'heavy' users, so the limits have yet to be tested. I'll say
right here: bandwidth is limited to 1 Gigabyte per month and each addditional
Gig will be $5. That is quite cheap. Shop around!
- What kind of modems does MonkeyBrains have?
They are all 56K modems integrated inside a Cisco piece of hardware. Rudy configured it himself.
- Are there enough modems?
Yes. There are no busy signals. MonkeyBrains has two PRIs (47 phone lines) and only 30 have ever been used simultaneously.
- May users run CGI scripts on the MonkeyBrains server?
There are a set of 'Canned Scripts' provided. If you need a general use script set
up which does something the canned scripts don't, I may help you set it up. It all
depends on wether you know what you want or not. I write web applications in my spare time and let users use them. For
example, www.monkeyview.net is a service for monkeybrains customers. It kicks ass
over what most other ISP offer! Here are the
instructions for using one of the MonkeyBrains scripts:
Guestbook instructions. You'll be able to tell from
that page, that MonkeyBrains can explain stuff to technical and non-technical people on
one page.
- Are there webstats --- who is viewing my webpage?
Check out the stats page.
- Do you back up your servers?
Yep. Many ISPs don't. To name two ISPs in SF, grin.net and sirius.com have both pissed
off customers by having their server's harddisk fail. MonkeyBrains backs up all web
data nightly. Your precious website will not be wiped out by an irrate cosmic ray. (unless of course the backup server crashes at the same time as the main server!)
- Are you competent to run an ISP?
Totally. I have worked for big corporations and small start-ups. Now, I work you,
the MonkeyBrainer. I build all the servers, install the OS (Operating SYstem),
design the website, program extra services (like the photo server), etc. Here is a photo
of the machine serving up this web page to you:
