- I'm going on vacation. How do I check my email?
Use a friend's computer! Use their dial-up account, and then (once dialed-up) set the email settings to get your mail. Don't save your password, or they can read your email!
- I keep getting disconnect. What is up?
You probably have 'call waiting'. Dial *70 before you dial to turn off call waiting. (Some phones need something other than *70 to turn off call waiting: you figure it out!)
- Can I use USENET and read newsgroups?
Sure! Set your news (NNTP) host to news.monkeybrains.net in your news reading program. Many people use Netscape to read news groups. In Netscape, you click NEWSGROUPS in the menu below 'Communicator'. If you are use Internet Explorer, read the manual. If you want a web-based interface to news groups, try google's newsreader.

- How do I check my email?
Check out the email help page.
- I am broke, can you hook me up?
Yes. If you work somewhere where I can get free coffee, food half off, massages, or discounts on merchandise: Let's make a deal. Fill out the sign-up form and tell me what you want to trade. Oh, if you have nothing to barter, forget about contacting me! Some many whiners email and say, "I run a non profit, can you host me for cheaper?" My response is: do something for profit and support you non-profit fantasy world! Shit, I ain't working for you for free!
- What browser am I using?
Click here to see information about your browser. Also, this will display your IP address.
- Here's a good one: I am going back to Boston for a month. Can I, that is, is it possible for one, assuming that they were so inclined and sufficiently apprised of the methodology, to update a website from a terminal ancillary to their primary point of function?
Can I tweak my site from Boston? [billy@wigout.net]
Yes. Just FTP to your account and you may upload files; however, you would need a local number to dial-in to. Maybe you can find a friend in Boston to bum off of, unless - of course - you are willing to pay a long-distance toll charge.
- How do I figure things out?
Do experiments! Keep track of settings you change, etc. and figure out what works for your computer. For example, for call waiting, you could call a friend and tell them to call you right back. Right before they call you back, you could dial '767-0666' to get the time. You should hear your 'call waiting' kick in with a beep, or whatever. Now, do the experiment again, but dial *70 before you call 767-0666. Did that stop the call waiting tone? This is called experimentation!
- How do I solve a computer problem?
By keeping everything real simple. The more complicated your solution, the more wrong you will
probably be! Also, trial and error; here is an except from a friend tech supporting a customer of his:
> Katie and I finally figured it out last night after 3 glasses of wine
> each...mail problem was due to the settings.
I told you I did not know outlook....oh well....I guess your learning that
computer shit is not just emailling people for answers....but also trying shit out yourself.
