Support - irc
If you want to chat to other monkeybrains customers, staff, and anyone else in the world, irc is a
good way to do it. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. There are all these "new" messaging and chat
systems out there, but irc has been around the longest and kicks the most ass.
Once you have an irc program, connect to the #monkeybrains channel on the efnet irc network.
These days, I connect to irc.efnet.org (which is located in Russia!)
Download a free IRC program
Use a Java applet, or download a client.
A good one comes with the Mozilla Browser. Click on the Window menu bar, and select Chat. In the window that pops up, click on efnet and then, type
/join #monkeybrains in the chat window.
If you don't have a chat client (a program to talk to irc servers) then you can download a free one:
Macs - use ShadowIRC (free!)
PCs - use mIRC (30 days free then $0 - $20 donation)
UNIX - epic or, since you are on UNIX, you ought to know best!
To think about these clients in the most simple terms, you use a web-browser (like Netscape or Internet Explorer) to view
webpages. To chat, you need an 'IRC Client'.
Tech made simple
How does IRC work and how can it support so many people and chat rooms?
What you do is connect with your client to a network of IRC servers. You talk to one server the messages you
type get sent to a cluster of IRC servers. These servers then rely the messages you typed to any person connected to a server
in that IRC network. In the end, what you type doesn't get sent to everyone on the planet, but only people in your chat room.
