MonkeyBrains.net now offers a Web Accelerator to all dial up users. To set up the proxy in FireFox, follow these steps:

 [1] Launch FireFox
 [2] Open "Preferences"
[3] Click on the "General" Tab
 [4] Click on "Connection Settings"
[5] Select "Manual proxy configuration" and fill out the
HTTP Proxy line. Set the HTTP Proxy to
www.monkeybrains.net and the Port to 8080.

Monkey: Why use the MonkeyBrains Accelerator Proxy?
Brains: The accelerator is free and uses technology already built into your browser. You get a faster Internet connection with fewer advertisements!

Monkey: How does it work?
Brains: You configure your browser to use the MonkeyBrains Proxy. The MonkeyBrains servers will fetch the page you want, compress the page to send to your modem, and block requests to the most common advertising site, thus preventing banner ads from clogging your phone line! Currently, only a limited number of ad sites are blocked while we are testing this functionality. Blocking ads makes the page load faster, stops those tacky flashing ads, and gives you another layer of privacy.

Monkey: How much faster will my connection be?
Brains: It totally depends. Images, movies, and audio will not be compresses, but text and HTML is compressed between 5x and 9x.

Monkey: What about mail?
Brains: If people start using the WWW proxy, a email proxy will be added as well for email clients that support compressed connections (Thunderbird does).

Monkey: Snacks, Coffee, Beer, Stickers, TShirts?
Brains: Yes! Stop by the office, 984 Folsom Street! Email me if the Accelerator works for you.

Monkey: How did you do this? I want to set one up at my work/ISP?
Brains: Very easily! I set up Apache 2.0 and used mod_proxy and mod_deflate.
