there's little i control

bad hair Originally uploaded by dressform.

found this today at the *new* paper-source store that opened in berkeley. yes, i am giddy with glee over having a paper-source on my side of the bay. i think i must have emailed them 5 times asking them to open on 4th street.... and they did! right next to anthropologie... oh so dangerous! the book is belated birthday present for a friend so i won't get to continually have a good giggle at it.... but it's good to share the laughter, right?

i finished devil in the white city!! i know abby you did and lisa you did too.... anke ? was anyone else reading along? i know several of you already read it.... but anyway. what a good read! i really loved the good ambition vs. the dark ambition.... the creation of this "white" city amidst chaos... the extreme pressure balanced by elaborate victorian manners [those menus!!]. i also liked knowing a bit more about olmstead - the guy who designed central park.... i couldn't read through the part with the detective trying to track down holmes' last moves fast enough. what a sick but completely spell-binding man [and when i finally saw that photo of him - THAT was handsome???].... i wish that erik larson wrote all my history books growing up.... maybe i'd actually remember something other than the founding fathers and the 3 branches of government....

well peeps... do we want to do this again? i have really liked the whole book club thing [and no, i didn't get around to the memebership cards... not for lack of thinking.... perhaps it will still happen?]. any thoughts on another book?? anyone? anyone??

and.... 2 more days left to sign up for the music swap... get those CD burners ready.... [gosh i wish mixed tapes were still vogue]

I love the paper-source, know I have tons of places here, but I just love how they do it at the paper source.
I didn't read along this time, but it sounds like such a rich book!! I'll have to play next time.

That book looks awesome - I will definitley have to read along in your next book club incarnation. I've been on a short story kick with McSweeny's latest (#18) and am having a hard time making the switch back to longer fiction. Instant literary gratification!

We have a PaperSource here in Los Angeles which I avoid like the plague- if only because I have never walked out of there for under $100! Granted, I use them for invitation components but still...

The next time you make it down to So.Cal you must check out Soolip Paperie on Melrose (http://www.soolip.com/)and the paper store at Bergamont Station Art Complex in Santa Monica (http://www.hiromipaper.com/store/home.php).

Yay! Yeah-wasn't the end horrible (the Holmes part)?! And he looked cross eyed to me...not cute. That poor mother-her kids so close-it broke my heart. As far as another book goes, hm...I'll email you some ideas this weekend, ok?

I laugh every time I see that book, partly because I think the guy on the front looks like Ewan McGregor!

I know I sould support a fellow Scot but I've never understood the Ewan McG thing, he's no Jedi and I just don't get the sex appeal that others talk about?

the hair book is hysterical. I always contemplate buying it.

well, I totally missed out on devil in the white city. not enough hours in the day for all that I want to do... (I know you know the feeling)... sounds like an amazing book, so I'll probably end up reading it. I'm game for the next one, though. keep me posted.

A little late, but still...yes, I'm ready for the next book! I still can't believe the 'devil' wasn't fiction...scary scary stuff!

On a lighter side...I think I saw this book somewhere - and isn't there another one with a woman on the cover?
