Custom work is fun and exciting. The best is when someone has a slight idea of what they would like and then asks me to use my best judgement. I've made rings, earrings, necklaces, compacts, animals, brooches, pretty much everything. I price the job according to the time it takes to design and fabricate plus materials. Jewelry and metalwork is an old trade; actually I know very few people who are jewelers. Sometimes the fact that jewelry, like all trades, can be mass produced for very low prices in other countries makes it hard to compete. But what I offer is being your personal metalsmith.
Sometimes I know my customers, sometimes I don't. The Heavy Metal pendant was made for a friend of a friend in Portland. When I sell jewelry through stores there is a factor of intrigue that I like because I don't know who bought it and who is wearing it.
I like making jewelry and metalworks because it is a portable art. People can wear it, keep it in a special box, give it away, pass it on, throw it in the ocean after a fight. When I make jewelry I enter a tiny world and use tiny tools, it's fun.
